Superintendent Awards Three Students a 2-Year Florida Prepaid College Scholarship

The cost of college is a little easier now for three high school seniors. Superintendent Dr. Ken Savage selected the students as the inaugural winners of the Florida Prepaid Superintendent Scholarship. The winners are:
- Chua Khanh Nguyen, East Lee County High School
- Limingjing Nong, Island Coast High School
- Davisha Brown, Young Parent Education Program
The Florida Prepaid Superintendent Scholarship is a Florida Prepaid 2-Year Florida College Plan. Worth $8,000, the scholarship prepays tuition and local fees for 60 lower division semester credit hours at any of the 28 Florida Colleges. Students were nominated by their school administrators for consideration.
“This scholarship means the world to me and my family,” said Chua Khanh Nguyen. “It will give us a huge sigh of relief from our financial worries and allow my mom to spoil herself a little more instead of taking care of everything but herself.”
Chua will attend Florida Gulf Coast University in the fall and plans to study Resort and Hospitality Administration. “Her passion for learning is evident through her grades and pursuit of challenging academic opportunities,” East Lee County High School Resource Teacher Alana Cordero wrote in her nomination. “Chau is involved on campus by being a part of the cheerleading team, math team, and Lady ELLE (Elegant Lady Leading East). She exhibits strong leadership skills on campus and is a model student for those around her.”
Limingjing Nong is graduating at the top of his class at Island Coast High School and is currently a full-time dual enrolled student at Florida SouthWestern State College. He will attend The University of Florida in the fall majoring in Political Science and envisioning a career in International Relations.
“We at Island Coast are excited that Limingjing Nong was awarded the Superintendent's Florida Prepaid Scholarship,” said School Counselor Dr. Stephen Thuot. “As a student who maintained a part-time job that required a considerable amount of his non-high school time and energy, this financial award will allow Limingjing to devote more time to his college academics rather than worry about balancing both academics and work responsibilities.”
Davisha Brown is balancing school, a full-time job and raising a baby, but she wants to continue her education.
“I would like to thank those who believed in me and nominated me for this scholarship,” Davisha Brown said. “As a young mother, financial hardships come about especially when it comes to going to college and building your career and future. Being chosen for this scholarship will fund my college to help give me a boost on my career.”
Davisha was nominated by her Assistant Principal at the Young Parent Education Program. Monica Urrely wrote, “Davisha should be awarded this scholarship because of her incredible resilience, worth ethic and dedication to her studies and future of her baby. She is a role model to her fellow students and younger siblings.”
Davisha plans to user her scholarship to attend Fort Myers Technical College’s Home Appliance Technician program and then continue her education at Florida SouthWestern State College in the Fall of 2025 to pursue Elementary Education.
In notifying the winners, Dr. Savage told them, “Your commitment to your studies, extracurricular activities and community involvement exemplifies the values we hold dear at the School District of Lee County. I encourage you to continue striving for excellence and seizing every opportunity that comes your way.”
All three scholarship winners will be recognized by the School Board at a future meeting. Each student has up to six years to use their scholarship.
